Developmental milestones
It is normal for different toddlers to develop eating, mobility and activity skills at different rates. This can make it difficult to determine whether a particular toddler is simply a late developer or is facing a more serious developmental problem. This presentation will highlight the ranges that are normal over time and offer advice on the points at which it is appropriate to intervene.

Faddy eaters
All children go through a faddy period at some stage in childhood, but some children are extremely rigid about what they eat and it is difficult to move them on to a more balanced diet. The causes of faddy eating, food refusal and selective eating will be discussed and the best methods of managing food refusal at different stages of development, or intervening with children’s rigid eating patterns, described.

Promoting healthy growth
We learn our eating habits from those we see around us at a very early age. It is therefore essential that toddlers are offered a healthy diet and that their parents lead by example. This interactive session will consider educational materials to help childcare professionals advise parents on preparing healthy, daily menus that toddlers will enjoy.

Janet Warren
The reality of the toddler diet in 2009
The results of a recent dietary survey in over 200 toddlers aged 12-24 months using an estimated food diary will be presented. The results show some worrying trends in the eating habits of our toddlers and also indicated that the majority of toddlers were not meeting the recommended daily intake for iron. The implications of these findings will be discussed and the importance of nutrition

in the early years will be highlighted in this talk.Alex Richardson Senior Research Fellow, Oxford
